The cottage garden in mid-summer. The Buffalograss walking path has
been freshly mowed. You can see the tall plumes of the Purple Fountaingrass and the yellow blossoms of the Esperanza (Tecoma stans). |
 |
After the old house was moved, we brought in about 8 yards of compost to
amend the soil that had been covered for almost 70 years! The tall plant
is Vitex (Vitex agnus-castus), also known as "Chaste Tree". In
medieval times, this was used as an anti-aphrodisiac by monks! |
 |
We used a 180-gallon concrete water trough as a reservoir for
the circulating water stream. It was much too heavy to push, so we had
to slide it along ramps to its final spot. |
 |
Andrew and I (with Bravo supervising) rolled the concrete tank from
the end of the trailer to the ramps. |

 |
Planted along the walking path that runs through the garden is
Mexican Feathergrass (Stipa tenuissima). |
 |
Planted next to an old sundial is Purple Fountaingrass (Pennisetum
setaceum 'Rubrum') and Hill Hardy Rosemary. |
 |
The walking path is planted in Buffalograss (Buchloe dactyloides).
Notice all of the yellow blooms on the Butterfly Bush. |

The garden in mid-summer, with the Purple Fountaingrass blowing in the
breeze. We planted blue morning glories along one of the fences. |
 |
Planted on the old dead cedar tree is Crossvine (Bignonia
capreolata). |
 |
One of the tulips from last spring that we planted in a bed in
front of the cottage garden. |
 |
Butterflies are frequent guests in the cottage garden during the warmer
months of the year. This lovely one is a Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus), feeding on a yellow Butterfly Bush (Buddleia). |
